The challenge
Asbestos is a term used to describe six natural fibrous minerals with high tensile strength that can be woven and are resistant to heat and most chemicals.
Exposure to asbestos can increase the likelihood of lung cancer, mesothelioma, and non-malignant lung conditions such as asbestosis (restricted use of the lungs due to retained asbestos fibres), and can cause changes in the pleura (lining of the chest cavity, outside the lungs).
What does the law say?
Exposure to asbestos is governed by the Asbestos Regulations, where Regulation 7 states that an assessment of employee potential exposure must be conducted at intervals not exceeding two years.
